Armstrong Atlantic State University Makes the Grade With Juniper Networks Wireless Solutions

Broad Set of Wireless Solutions Meet Density Requirements of a College Campus While Delivering a Secure, Resilient Mobile User Experience at Lower Costs

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 30, 2013) - Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that Armstrong Atlantic State University, part of the University System of Georgia, has successfully deployed Juniper Networks wireless solutions across its campus-wide network. To support the burgeoning use of mobile devices among students, faculty and staff, Savannah, Georgia-based Armstrong Atlantic State University partnered with Juniper Networks to build out a robust data center and campus network architecture. The new wireless local area network (WLAN) delivers a reliable, consistent mobile experience capable of handling thousands of concurrent sessions of high-definition video, online collaboration and bandwidth-intensive academic research and computational processes.

As a four-year state university offering more than 100 different academic programs to approximately 7,500 students, Armstrong recognized that implementing a comprehensive campus solution with converged wired and wireless capabilities would have a direct and positive impact on its student, faculty and staff communities. In addition, the University supports distance-learning initiatives catering to a large military and mid-career audience, which dictated the need for a robust data center solution. With Juniper Networks, Armstrong was able to build a data center and campus network that addressed their needs while lowering operating costs.

As the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend continues to evolve, the ability for wireless networks to securely support large numbers of mobile devices simultaneously is a top concern for IT administrators. Armstrong's mobile users expect a seamless wireless experience, even as they transition between wired and wireless environments; if they have a negative experience, it can be potentially damaging to the organization's reputation.

In a recent third-party test conducted by wireless broadband consulting firm Novarum, Juniper Networks wireless solutions were proven to withstand large-scale, high-density BYOD environments without interruption, even in extremely bandwidth-intensive environments. As part of the rigorous testing process, Juniper Networks wireless LAN solutions were put through multiple failure scenarios and able to maintain strong connectivity throughout. When tested against competitive offerings, the test results revealed that Juniper Networks wireless LAN solutions were able to deliver high performance network connectivity coupled with additional advanced capabilities, such as Virtual Controller Cluster, which provides hitless fail-over to ensure uninterrupted network traffic to support critical applications.

 News Highlights:

Juniper Networks® WLC Series Wireless LAN Controllers and WLA Series Wireless LAN Access Points, combined with the Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches, allow Armstrong to deploy a converged data center and campus network that delivers a robust, reliable wired and wireless experience to every user, regardless of location. In addition, with the use of Junos® Space Network Director, which provides a single pane of glass view into both wired and wireless network environments, Armstrong was able to reap the benefits of more efficient network management. Since the roll-out in Spring 2012, the University has seen roughly a 30 percent reduction in operating costs over its previous network vendor deployment. The University has plans to implement a nearly end-to-end Juniper Networks solution within its data center and campus environments, which will further reduce network complexity and maximize uptime. As an institution of higher learning that must maintain and process volumes of personal student data, Armstrong takes security very seriously. With Juniper Networks MAG6610 Junos Pulse Gateways, Armstrong was able to provide authorized users, including students, faculty, staff, guests and contractors, with safe, secure remote and LAN-based network access from anywhere on campus. The MAG Series Gateways integrate with the University's authentication system and interoperate with EX Series switches and any 802.1x device for dynamic context-aware security policy enforcement. To ensure a smooth deployment with minimal downtime, Armstrong turned to network systems integrator and Juniper Networks Partner Advantage Program Elite partner, Layer 3 Communications. Following the initial deployment, Layer 3 Communications continues to provide Armstrong with professional and technical support services for product support and maintenance at the local level.

Supporting Quotes:

"At Armstrong, we fully believe that every student deserves a high quality education and are committed to helping them reach their full potential. The reality is that ubiquitous, secure wireless connectivity is a must-have on today's modern college campuses. If you don't have it, it can have some serious negative ramifications to the institution's reputation. Working with Juniper Networks, we have been able to build out a secure wired and wireless data center and campus network infrastructure that addresses our needs today and well into tomorrow, all while improving total cost of ownership."
-Robert Howard, chief information officer, Armstrong Atlantic State University

"As a specialized network systems integrator, our primary focus is on providing the highest level of guidance, support and services to help our customers build next-generation networks that best support their businesses. In the case of Armstrong, Layer 3 Communications' professional services complemented the University's technical team's capabilities with local engineering resources to provide an additional layer of skill and expertise throughout the design, integration and upgrade process. Being locally based in Georgia, our true value comes from having a keen understanding of the local market and close proximity to the customer to ensure that Armstrong benefits from its investment with Juniper Networks."
-Rodney Turner, chief executive officer, Layer 3 Communications

"For this test -- the largest public wireless LAN test of its kind -- we constructed a repeatable test scenario with 300+ typical Wi-Fi clients accessing an enterprise WLAN consisting of six modern dual-band 802.11n enterprise access points in a high availability configuration with redundant controllers. In almost all of the tests we conducted, we overloaded the network with more traffic than would occur in a 'real-life' scenario so that we could observe how the network behaved under stress. The Juniper Networks WLAN system delivered consistent throughput during these tests and operated in a stable fashion under very high offered load. The Juniper system excelled at spreading the client load evenly -- with each laptop, tablet or smartphone getting a fair slice of the available system capacity. We also created some intentional hardware failures during the testing and the Juniper Networks WLAN system proved to be rock-solid through them all. The Juniper system maintained consistent network connectivity and throughput during a controller failover in the middle of a test."
-Phil Belanger, founder and chief marketing officer, Novarum

"Like many enterprises, universities are under extreme pressure to balance investment to ensure competitiveness while functioning under tight budgetary constraints. Industry disruptors like BYOD are forcing colleges to grapple with challenges such as explosive volume of devices used on campus. These devices are straining bandwidth resources and demanding new security requirements. At Juniper Networks, our customer-driven innovation is derived from closely listening to what our customers need and building the best solutions to help them solve their biggest challenges. This is why our wireless products are built to deliver highly resilient and reliable performance at scale."
- Steve Collen, vice president of marketing, Campus and Data Center Business Unit, Juniper Networks

MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router Portfolio Delivers the Industry's Fastest Services for Consumers' Mobile-, Social- and Video-Driven Lives

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 15, 2013) - Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced enhancements to the SDN-ready Juniper Networks® MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router portfolio that significantly expands system capacity, subscriber bandwidth and service performance for the world's broadest family of edge routers.

Service providers and cable operators are under pressure to increase profitability amid rising network costs. Juniper's line-card enhancements to its MX Series pack more power in the same chassis, making it an ideal platform for investment-protecting scale. This is critical, given the relentless pace of subscriber and traffic growth.

To put its tremendous throughput in perspective, the MX2020, Juniper's highest capacity MX router, can simultaneously stream high-definition video to nearly every one of California's 11.5 million households. Furthermore, it can move the equivalent of 187 times the total number of daily Vine video uploads almost instantaneously.

Powered by the Junos® operating system and the programmable Junos Trio chipset, the MX Series 3D routers deliver unprecedented performance and service scale that enables the cost effective consolidation of business and residential services. In addition to the increase in network traffic, unpredictable spikes in data driven by global events are causing waves of stress from the service provider edge to the network core. As service providers deploy new customer services and applications, their infrastructures need to be agile and scalable enough to respond immediately to varying types of network traffic.

News Highlights

Operational Benefits - Increasing the top line revenue while reducing operational costs is a critical success factor for XO Communications. Together, the PTX5000 and MX2020 routers reduce 10G edge and 100G backbone transport costs. The PTX5000 packet optical design allows XO Communications to cost-effectively interconnect sites more than 1200 miles apart, the equivalent distance between San Francisco, Calif. and Denver, Colo. while the MX2020 provides the massive capacity and performance to scale service delivery by providing customers with more bandwidth using fewer routers. This cost control lets XO Communications be more agile and improve the customer experience while also reducing customer fees. Scaling from the Services Edge to the Core - The PTX5000 and MX2020 MPLS-based routers provide XO Communications with the massive performance, reliability and service delivery for enterprise cloud services that customers need during times of peak traffic. The PTX5000 allows XO Communications to remove network layers, saving money in operations and reducing core network provisioning costs. With Juniper, the company expects network CapEx cost savings up to 65 percent compared to traditional architectures and up to 35 percent savings compared to a pure IP routing solution. Together with the 80 Tbps of capacity in a single MX2020, XO Communications has enough bandwidth to deliver high-definition video to every household in New York and still have capacity left over for all of New Jersey.

Supporting Quotes

"Since our network covers more than one million miles of fiber optic lines across the United States, we are constantly looking for ways to improve operational expenses while expediting revenue generating service introductions. Juniper's PTX5000 and MX2020 routers enable us to accelerate the delivery of new services to our customers without being hindered by operational complexity and performance limitations. As a result, we are well positioned to improve our customers' experience and deliver competitive solutions for years to come."

Juniper Networks Announces Availability of Comprehensive Distributed Denial of Service Protection for the Data Center

Junos DDoS Secure Only Security Solution to Deliver Intelligence-Based Analytics That Prevent High-Volume and Targeted Application-Level Attacks

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 4, 2013) - Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced the availability of Junos® DDoS Secure to protect data centers against increasingly complex Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. A key part of Juniper's security portfolio, Junos DDoS Secure uses behavioral analytics and detailed network visibility to provide scalable protection against all major types of DDoS attacks.

For enterprises and service providers with a major online presence, the potential loss of productivity and customers due to a network outage from an attack can be catastrophic to business operations. According to a February 2013 Ponemon Institute study commissioned by Juniper Networks, IT professionals surveyed cited web-based (65 percent) and DDoS attacks (60 percent) as the most serious types of attacks experienced by companies. Along with traditional high-volume attacks that leverage massive amounts of traffic to overwhelm a data center, businesses now face targeted low-bandwidth attacks on data-heavy applications that go undetected by traditional DDoS mitigation solutions.

Preventing application-level or "low-and-slow" attacks requires security professionals have granular visibility and control of network traffic once it enters the data center versus simply the ability to block DDoS traffic at the edge of the network. Juniper Networks® Junos DDoS Secure offers this visibility providing customers with fully automated DDoS protection against "low-and-slow" application attacks with minimal false positives, as well as up to 10 Gbps of mitigation against volumetric attacks.

News Highlights
Junos DDoS Secure provides companies and organizations with web infrastructures of all sizes protection against targeted application-level and wide-scale volumetric attacks.

Application-Level Intelligence: By continually monitoring and logging all inbound and outbound Web traffic using its unique behavioral algorithm, Junos DDoS Secure learns which IP addresses can be trusted. The algorithm is able to detect unusual activity coming from a user and then intelligently respond in real time by dropping suspect or noncompliant traffic as soon as the optimum performance from critical resources begins to degrade.

Further, using advanced dynamic distributed threat intelligence (DDTI) techniques, Junos DDoS Secure also ensures that when a threat is detected at one gateway, within seconds, all the other Junos DDoS Secure appliances on the network are updated with the latest information needed to protect critical resources.

Scalable Deployment: For maximum flexibility of deployment, Junos DDoS Secure is uniquely available to operate in a range of virtualized environments, including VMware and KVM-based systems for private, public or hybrid cloud environments. It is also fully IPv6 compliant. The virtual Junos DDoS Secure offering provides large enterprises the ability to rapidly scale and configure a global defense shield using existing server capacity in regional data centers. It also provides Internet service providers with the ability to easily roll out DDoS mitigation as an additional managed service for customers by leveraging their existing virtual infrastructure.

Availability and Pricing: Junos DDoS Secure is available later this quarter and is offered as both a perpetual and subscription software license. Perpetual license is priced at $18,950 per 1 Gbps and 1 year subscription license at $8,950 for 1Gbps. Software maintenance via the Juniper Care Software Advantage is provided at an additional fee for perpetual licenses. Software maintenance is included in the subscription license fee.

Supporting Quotes
"
Enterprises and service providers interested in safeguarding availability would be well served to consider both size and sophistication in architecting a DDoS security strategy. Junos DDoS Secure offers customers a unique, intelligence-based approach to protecting against all types of DDoS attacks, providing next generation security for today's data center."
-David Koretz, vice president and general manager, Counter Security, Juniper Networks

"At Xerox Services, our business relies on delivering consistent and secure access to our clients' websites and services, which makes protecting against the growing threat of DDoS attacks a key priority. With Juniper's Junos DDoS Secure solution, we are able to better protect our clients' websites against both volumetric and targeted application-layer attacks to ensure they are always online and running at maximum efficiency."
- Kevin Taylor, managing director of ITO UK, ACS Information Technologies UK Ltd, A Xerox Company
