Microsoft seems to be getting all of its ducks in a row ahead of Friday's Xbox One launch after rolling out the new console's second screen companion app, SmartGlass, across the major mobile platforms.

The new and improved version of SmartGlass, which can be used as a remote and a controller, to watch DVR clips on the go, browse Xbox Live and interact with friends, landed on Windows Phone on Tuesday.

As the day progressed, the free download turned up on Google Play and, as the evening came to a close, up popped SmartGlass on the App Store for iOS devices.

Gamers will also be able to use SmartGlass for Xbox One to browse the Xbox Store, read and reply to messages, and pin content to view on the console, as part of the improved functionality.

Back in September TechRadar spoke with Ron Pessner, the man behind the SmartGlass app, who enthused about the new speedier connection, which is 3.5x faster than the Xbox 360 version.

"The pairing should feel almost magical," he said. "It should be really delightful, like when you take your laptop home and it automatically connects to your Wi-Fi.

"As proud of we are of the Xbox 360 SmartGlass one of the main pieces of feedback was around the connection latency time – but now it should feel instantaneous."

Unfortunately, expectant Xbox One fanciers will have to wait until Friday at the earliest in order to give the smarter, speedier SmartGlass a spin for themselves.

Using iTunes for Windows, you can easily "burn" audio, data, and MP3 CDs with most major disc drives, including:

CD-R CD-RW DVD-R/RW DVD+R/RW

Here are a few tips you can try to solve common issues burning discs with iTunes for Windows.

Download and install the latest version of iTunes. See "Can't burn a CD in iTunes for Windows" for basic troubleshooting steps. If you continue to have difficulty, then continue with the additional troubleshooting steps below. Resolution

If after following the instructions in this document you still can't read or burn discs, try the following:

Try other software Open a different music player, such as Windows Media Player, and test if it can play a CD you've burned. Open the CD burning software that came with your computer or disc drive, and test to see if it can burn a CD.

If you're not able to read or burn discs using other software, there may be a more general issue with your computer or the drive. You should probably contact your computer or drive manufacturer for help. In the mean time, try the tips below.

Use good blank discs

Some brands of blank discs may work better with your drive than others. Check the disc manufacturer's website for the brand of blank discs you are using. Many brands post lists of drives that have issues burning to their discs. They may also publish tips on how to troubleshoot burning issues.

You can use the chart below as a general guideline to assess what types of CD-R media are compatible with different drive types.

Check for software updates

Microsoft or your computer's manufacturer may have released updated software. Check to see if there are updates to Windows or to the software that controls the drive. Check your computer manufacturer's website for updates, particularly for updates to the CD or DVD drive. If you bought the drive separately from the computer, check the drive manufacturer's website. See this document for additional information on updating software for Windows.

Check for firmware updates

From time to time manufacturers publish updates to a CD or DVD drive's internal software (known as firmware). Check your computer manufacturer's website for firmware updates first. This is important because the internal drives used by some companies (including Dell) require special firmware. If an update is not available from the computer manufacturer, check with the company that made the drive.

Updating your drive's firmware is a particularly good troubleshooting step if iTunes is showing a 2122, 2123, or 2131 error when trying to burn a CD. For optical drives manufactured by Aopen, firmware updates can be downloaded at http://download.aopen.com.tw/.

Important: Use special care when installing firmware updates. Incorrectly installing a firmware update could damage the drive and make it unusable. Always check with the computer manufacturer first before checking with the drive manufacturer.

Tip: If you need help with the next two steps, contact the company that manufactured your computer or drive.

Check hardware configuration

Check if your computer's drive is capable of Direct Memory Access (DMA). If so, turn on that feature and make sure the drive is not set to use Programmed Input Output (PIO). DMA and PIO are two ways a drive can be configured to connect and transfer data to a computer. PIO is the slower method. This could affect the drive's performance. If you have two drives, make sure the other drive is not using PIO either. It could affect the drive you are trying to use with iTunes. Check with the computer or drive manufacturer for additional information.

To turn on DMA:

Open Device Manager (right-click on My Computer (Windows XP and Windows 2000) or Computer (Windows Vista and Windows 7) and in the shortcut menu, click Manage) Select Device Manager. Click the plus sign, or arrow, next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Right-click on the IDE bus that contains the optical drive and in the shortcut menu, click Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
Make sure the Transfer Mode for the devices on the bus is set to DMA if available, not PIO Only.

Check drive audio cable

Some internal drives (such as the MediaStor CD-R/RW 52x24x52x) have a 2- to 4-pin analog audio cable that must be plugged into the main motherboard. This is in addition to the wider 40- to 80-pin ATA or IDE cable that connects the drive to the logic board. If the analog audio cable is not plugged in, the drive can behave in erratic ways.

Remove iPod and test

If you connect your iPod to the computer via USB and you use a USB burner, try ejecting and disconnecting iPod before trying to burn.

Ninepin Bowling is a 3D bowling game for your Windows Phone 8 device. It's a nicely animated, somewhat challenging game for those wanting a break from the 10-pin bowling games.

Ninepin Bowling is a fun game for your Windows Phone but it does have a little room for improvement. The one issue that may hold this game back the most is the lack of a trial version.

Where 10-pin bowling has ten pins arranged in a triangle pattern, 9-pin bowling has you facing nine pins arranged in a diamond pattern. You play in rounds to knock down the most pins. Scoring is based on the total pins fallen. You do have strikes but, unlike 10-pin bowling, you do not have spares.

You can earn ten bonus points by scoring a Crown or Ring by knocking all the pins down but the center (known as the Kingpin). You also earn extra points by only knocking down the Kingpin and if you fail to knock any of the pins downs (referred to as a Poodle) you lose a pin.

Ninepin Bowling supports up to nine players in a pass/play game. You can also increase the number of rounds and number of balls thrown per round.

Game play with Ninepin Bowling is simple. You can slide the ball's position in the lane and when set, just swipe at the screen in the direction you want the ball to travel.  Unlike other bowling games, Ninepin Bowling is played in horizontal orientation. It gives you a wider view of things and does help with the 3D graphics a bit.

Ninepin Bowling isn't a shabby game and while it has nice graphics and animations, there is room for improvement. First, there are no settings or help section for the game. Settings would be nice to mute the game sounds. While the Store description does a nice job of detailing the game, it would be nice to be able to access the same from within the game.

The other areas of improvement deal with game play. You can't tap to skip the animations or transition screens to speed things up (e.g. skip the ball return, pin re-setting, etc.).  Let's face it.  Watching the ball return or the pins reset is neat the first few times but there are times you want to skip right to the meat of the game and bowl.  

Also, the physics engine that drives your rolls tends to drift to the right more times than not.  I could slide my finger fairly straight but the ball drifted to the right, scoring plenty of Poodles along the way.

Ninepin Bowling has potential, the game does grow on you and it's a nice change of pace from the 10-pin version of bowling. While there is room for improvement, the one issue that may hold this game back the most is the lack of a trial version.  You may not like 9-pin bowling and having three rounds of play in a trial to let you see first hand before buying would be nice.

Update: In checking the game's listing just a minute ago, Ninepin Bowling is now a free game for your Windows Phone 8 device.  We aren't sure if this is a temporary price reduction or a permanent one.
