Department of Energy-Funded Lab Builds Model Science DMZ to Optimize Its Network for High-Performance Scientific Applications

DENVER, CO--(Marketwired - Nov 19, 2013) -  SC13 -- Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has upgraded its network core with the Juniper Networks® MX2000 Series 3D Universal Edge Routers. Enhancing its backbone routing infrastructure with the MX Series will help the Lab fully leverage its high-performance computing capabilities to advance the study of nuclear and particle physics, support photon sciences and nanomaterials research, and enable cross-disciplinary research to understand the relationship between climate change, sustainable energy and Earth's ecosystems.

Brookhaven National Laboratory, a multipurpose research institution funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, applies world-class expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science -- from the birth of the universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. Implementing a Science DMZ -- a scalable network design model for optimizing scientific data transfers -- near the laboratory's local network perimeter will help optimize equipment, configuration and security policies for high-performance scientific applications.

With support for hundreds of 10GbE interfaces and dozens of 100GbE interfaces, the MX2000 Series router will help enable BNL's network to carry extremely large data flows efficiently, as many flows on BNL's network exceed 100 GB. This new capability will be crucial for BNL as it provides computing services for the experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL, the U.S.-based collaborators in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and the collaborators in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope project.

The MX2000 Series will be showcased at the 2013 Supercomputing Conference; please visit Juniper Networks at booth #2532.

Supporting Quote

"Juniper has partnered with Brookhaven National Laboratory to continue its long tradition of providing cutting edge solutions and architectures for the next generation, high-performance networks required by leaders in the U.S. and global scientific and research community. When seeking out an app or game in BlackBerry World, you have the ability to scan a barcode using your BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10 to quickly access the application on your device.

For example, if you're cruising around the BlackBerry World store on your computer and find something you want to download, you can just fire up BlackBerry World on your phone, scan the barcode on your device and instantly be taken to the app page without the added effort of having to browse or search for said app again.

While the feature itself is dead simple to use, finding it at first may not be as easy. Thankfully we're here to point you in the right direction.

To scan a barcode in BlackBerry World, first open BlackBerry World on your device.

Swipe down from the top bezel, then tap Scan Barcode

Move your device so the camera can focus on the barcode you want to scan

Viola! Your device will automatically scan the barcode once it's in focus. After it scans you'll be magically whisked away to the application page right on your device.

Here, go ahead and try it on this barcode:

That's all there is to it! You can also use the scanner for most other barcodes as well like the ones on some promotional materials & in stores or restaurants.

How do I scan the bar code when I'm using the crackberry app to view this?

Posted via CB10

Reply gkl 13 hours ago

I have ben saying for a while (mostly to myself) that barcodes should be recognized by the OS. Just like phone numbers and addresses. Clickable to launch the proper app (usually web browser).

Reply Anilu7 12 hours ago

Agree here! Several times I've wanted to join a BBM group or scan a barcode but from on my Z10 screen or browser. It should recognize barcodes that are already displayed on the screen as well as scanning ones on a separate object/screen.

Reply mphillips828 14 hours ago

This barcode scanned INSTANTLY!! I didnt even focus the phone or center the barcode, it instantly scanned! really fast that is amazing...I remember using it on Bold 9900 and it wasnt like that!

Reply niss63 14 hours ago

That's because the camera on the 9900 is garbage.

Posted via CB10

Reply Xader 14 hours ago

I don't know what your issue was, but my 9900 has never had a problem scanning a barcode.

Go figure...

Reply Kevin Michaluk 13 hours ago

I showed a person how to do this on their BlackBerry just this weekend.

It's almost a feature that could / should also be broken out of BBWORLD and posted as a standalone native app just for discoverability. Works great!

Posted via CB10

Reply SDTRMG 13 hours ago

You can use the built on/native smart tags app. It has a barcode reader. Works too I just tested it.

edit: it makes a smart tag, but when clicked tags you to the crackberry app(or where the barcode is suppose to take you)

Reply gozno421 11 hours ago

It already is a stand alone app... You can use the smart tags app to do the same thing. Once the code has been scanned, tapping on it will link directly to BBWorld.

Reply mphillips828 13 hours ago

No never a problem scanning just from what I remember it needed to be more in focus and within the square. This phone I had it far away and it still grabbed the bar code even when the entire website was showing on screen

Reply trynacu2 13 hours ago

Very cool.

Reply bjorn_late 13 hours ago

Just so you know, you can do this through Smart Tags as well.

Once scanned in Smart Tags, the tag is saved.

From Smart Tags you can share that scanned item with others, through NFC, Barcode, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Reply independentvolume 12 hours ago

Does this work in stores as well. On my WP you could scan the barcode of a product and it would google info, average price, reviews, ect...

Reply blockbuy 12 hours ago

can barcode should be an app you click on like any other - never understood having to open app world to use it.

Also another bug is being able to make a call from text message - where's the option to make a call?

Reply Always smiling 12 hours ago

When in chat with the bar across the top with the persons name, press and hold. On the right hand side will pop out the call or phone option.

Posted via CB10

Reply blockbuy 11 hours ago

Well there you go - not obvious and involves an extra click compared to os7 on the 9900 (click and there's an option to reply or call as I recall).

Cheers, very helpful :-)

Reply JimCanuck 12 hours ago

The Smart Tags program that comes with the device also handles QR codes.

Reply airwolf04 12 hours ago

It's not viola but voilà in French :)

The only way to scan bar codes are via BlackBerry App World and smart tags

Wow. For dumb.

Reply HedoBum 5 hours ago

Just to throw a modicum of confusion into this.... are we talking barcodes? Or QRcodes?
Because you do realize they're two different things, don't you? Or does the Z10 QRcode reader also read bar codes?

The first teaser trailer for Thor 2: The Dark World has hit the internet and... I don't know what to make of it yet. I enjoyed Malekith, the accursed dark elf, as Walt Simonson rendered him in the Thor comics decades ago, but I don't get any real sense of his character here and how it plays into whatever greater story arc they have for Thor this time around. And his look in the film doesn't really wow me so far.

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

There seems to be some reverse fish-out-of-water action going on, with Sarah Foster going to Asgard this time instead of Thor going to Earth/Midgard like in the previous film, but other than that... not much is shown.

Hopefully they're building up to Surtur and an adaption of Ragnarok 'n Roll for the third movie in the series, because that's probably the best Thor story ever written, and I'd love to see it brought to film. We'll have to wait until more trailers are released later this summer, and ultimately until Thor 2: The Dark World is released and we've seen it to know for sure, but in the mean time there's lots of great Marvel Thor media on iTunes to tide us over. Here are some of my favorites. (I'm re-watching Avengers for what must be the 12th time on my iPad mini right now.)
