When seeking out an app or game in BlackBerry World, you have the ability to scan a barcode using your BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10 to quickly access the application on your device.
For example, if you're cruising around the BlackBerry World store on your computer and find something you want to download, you can just fire up BlackBerry World on your phone, scan the barcode on your device and instantly be taken to the app page without the added effort of having to browse or search for said app again.
While the feature itself is dead simple to use, finding it at first may not be as easy. Thankfully we're here to point you in the right direction.
To scan a barcode in BlackBerry World, first open BlackBerry World on your device.
Swipe down from the top bezel, then tap Scan Barcode

Move your device so the camera can focus on the barcode you want to scan

Viola! Your device will automatically scan the barcode once it's in focus. After it scans you'll be magically whisked away to the application page right on your device.
Here, go ahead and try it on this barcode:

That's all there is to it! You can also use the scanner for most other barcodes as well like the ones on some promotional materials & in stores or restaurants.

How do I scan the bar code when I'm using the crackberry app to view this?

I have ben saying for a while (mostly to myself) that barcodes should be recognized by the OS. Just like phone numbers and addresses. Clickable to launch the proper app (usually web browser).

Agree here! Several times I've wanted to join a BBM group or scan a barcode but from on my Z10 screen or browser. It should recognize barcodes that are already displayed on the screen as well as scanning ones on a separate object/screen.

This barcode scanned INSTANTLY!! I didnt even focus the phone or center the barcode, it instantly scanned! really fast that is amazing...I remember using it on Bold 9900 and it wasnt like that!

That's because the camera on the 9900 is garbage.

I don't know what your issue was, but my 9900 has never had a problem scanning a barcode.
Go figure...

I showed a person how to do this on their BlackBerry just this weekend.
It's almost a feature that could / should also be broken out of BBWORLD and posted as a standalone native app just for discoverability. Works great!

You can use the built on/native smart tags app. It has a barcode reader. Works too I just tested it.
edit: it makes a smart tag, but when clicked tags you to the crackberry app(or where the barcode is suppose to take you)

It already is a stand alone app... You can use the smart tags app to do the same thing. Once the code has been scanned, tapping on it will link directly to BBWorld.

No never a problem scanning just from what I remember it needed to be more in focus and within the square. This phone I had it far away and it still grabbed the bar code even when the entire website was showing on screen

Very cool.

Just so you know, you can do this through Smart Tags as well.
Once scanned in Smart Tags, the tag is saved.
From Smart Tags you can share that scanned item with others, through NFC, Barcode, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Does this work in stores as well. On my WP you could scan the barcode of a product and it would google info, average price, reviews, ect...

can barcode should be an app you click on like any other - never understood having to open app world to use it.
Also another bug is being able to make a call from text message - where's the option to make a call?
Reply
When in chat with the bar across the top with the persons name, press and hold. On the right hand side will pop out the call or phone option.

Well there you go - not obvious and involves an extra click compared to os7 on the 9900 (click and there's an option to reply or call as I recall).
Cheers, very helpful :-)

The Smart Tags program that comes with the device also handles QR codes.

It's not viola but voilà in French :)

The only way to scan bar codes are via BlackBerry App World and smart tags

Wow. For dumb.

Just to throw a modicum of confusion into this.... are we talking barcodes? Or QRcodes?
Because you do realize they're two different things, don't you? Or does the Z10 QRcode reader also read bar codes?
