Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, iTunes, iTunes Store, Windows, Internet Explorer

Symptoms

If you are unable to sign in or purchase content from the iTunes Store, you may see the following alert:

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. A secure network connection could not be established.
Make sure SSL 3.0 or TLS 1.0 is enabled in the Internet Options control panel, then try again."

Resolution

Collapse All Sections | Expand All Sections

In an effort to protect your privacy, iTunes uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol when you sign in to the iTunes Store. The SSL protocol uses port 443, the date and time, and other information from your computer to function as expected. The troubleshooting steps below will address the most commonly incorrect information that SSL and the iTunes Store require; this should resolve the issue and the alert should no longer appear.

Set your date and time

Check your computer's date, time, and time zone. If they are not correct, set the correct date, time, and time zone.

On Windows Click Start and then click Control Panel. Click "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options" (Windows XP) or "Clock, Language, and Region" (Windows Vista & Windows 7). Click Date and Time. Click the Date & Time tab.
Date and Time as it appears on Windows 7 Make sure that the date and time settings are configured to use the current date and time and then click OK. On Mac OS X From the Apple (?) menu, choose System Preferences. In System Preferences, click Date & Time. Enable the option to "Set date and time automatically" if it is not.
Click the Time Zone tab and adjust the time zone to match your current location. Further troubleshooting steps (for Windows only)Correctly configure Internet Options Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Select the Advanced tab. Under the Security section, look for Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0. Make sure at least one of those two checkboxes is selected and click OK. (You can select both checkboxes).

Update, configure, disable, or remove security software If you are able to sign in to secure websites in your web browser but iTunes is unable to do so, security software may be interfering with the normal operation of iTunes. If this is the case, follow the steps in iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. If you are also unable to sign in to secure websites in your web browser, follow the steps in Microsoft's article You cannot log in to or connect to secured Web sites in Internet Explorer.

Note: Music streaming from iTunes, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is done via AirPlay. For an overview of AirPlay features, see the iTunes AirPlay page. For more details about AirPort Express and music sharing, see the AirPort Express Music Sharing page.

Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay

Use powered speakers with a stereo mini-jack connector. Do not connect USB speakers to AirPort Express. Do not connect AirPort Express to the phono jack on your stereo. You can stream iTunes music to more than one AirPort Express at a time by choosing Multiple Speakers from the speakers pop-up menu. Only one computer at a time can stream music to AirPort Express. You can connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers using a digital fiber optic cable, analog mini-stereo-to-dual-RCA cable, or mini-stereo to mini-stereo cable (depending on what type of connectors your stereo uses) connected to the Line Out port. Wireless computers within range of AirPort Express can wirelessly stream music to it using iTunes 4.6 or later. You may connect an optional power cord if you are setting up your AirPort Express away from a power outlet.

Things to consider before you begin

Start with a plan for the physical layout. Depending on whether you have an existing Wi-Fi network, or if you are using your AirPort Express as a standalone Wi-Fi device, there are several options available for you to choose from. When using Ethernet, Cat6 cable is recommended. The layout you choose should take into account environmental factors such as physical access, location, range, radio frequency interference, etc. You will need to consider what AirPort Utility settings to adopt. You will need to know whether you are using an AirPort Express (802.11b/g) or an AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g/n).

If you will be using more than one Wi-Fi base station, it may be helpful to read the article Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations.

Different usage scenarios for the AirPort Express, and how to set them up

AirPort Express as a standalone simultaneous Wi-Fi base station, and iTunes music device

The AirPort Express is the only Wi-Fi base station. It provides simultaneous Wi-Fi access and AirPlay streaming.

This configuration requires that the AirPort Express is in physical cable range of both the audio device and the DSL/Cable router at the same time.

How to Set It Up

Connect your DSL or cable modem to your AirPort Express using the WAN Ethernet port. Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers. Plug AirPort Express into the power outlet. There is no "on" switch. Use AirPort Utility to create a new network. Ensure that "Enable AirPlay/AirTunes" is checked in the Music tab. Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window.

Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network as part of a roaming network

The AirPort Express is connected to the primary Wi-Fi base station with Ethernet. It extends the range of an existing Roaming Wi-Fi network and provides AirPlay streaming.

How to Set It Up

AirPort Utility 6.1

Ensure that the AirPort base station Ethernet cables are connected as above Launch AirPort Utility 6.1. The Assistant will automatically configure the Roaming network

AirPort Utility 5.6.1

Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers. Plug AirPort Express into the power outlet. There is no "on" switch. Connect an Ethernet cable (Cat6) from a LAN port of the primary Wi-Fi base station to the Ethernet port of the AirPort Express. Use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Express as part of a Roaming network. For steps to configure a Roaming network, read Setting up and configuring a roaming network (802.11 a/b/g/n). Ensure that "Enable AirPlay/AirTunes" is checked in the AirPort Utility Music tab. Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window.

Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music

AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.

Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.

How to Set It Up

Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers. From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary. Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.

Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network as part of a legacy WDS or Extended Network

AirPort Express extends Wi-Fi network range and streams iTunes music simultaneously using Extended Network for AirPort Express with 802.11n, or legacy WDS with AirPort Express 802.11g from another Wi-Fi base station.

Due to the overhead required for this configuration, you may expect AirPlay drop-outs such as intermittent loss of audio.

How to Set It Up

Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers. Plug AirPort Express into the power outlet. There is no "on" switch. If you are setting up an AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g/n) with other 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi base stations, read Setting up and configuring an extended wireless network (802.11n) OR, if you are setting up an AirPort Express (802.11b/g) with other 802.11b/g Wi-Fi base stations, read Setting up and configuring a Wireless Distribution System (802.11b/g). Ensure that "Enable AirPlay/AirTunes" is checked in the AirPort Utility Music tab. Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window.
Note: Apple doesn’t recommend combining 802.11 b/g and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi base stations in the same network.

Symptoms

Learn some additional steps to troubleshoot burning issues.

Using iTunes for Windows, you can easily "burn" audio, data, and MP3 CDs with most major disc drives, including:

CD-R CD-RW DVD-R/RW DVD+R/RW

Here are a few tips you can try to solve common issues burning discs with iTunes for Windows.

Download and install the latest version of iTunes. See "Can't burn a CD in iTunes for Windows" for basic troubleshooting steps. If you continue to have difficulty, then continue with the additional troubleshooting steps below. Resolution

If after following the instructions in this document you still can't read or burn discs, try the following:

Try other software Open a different music player, such as Windows Media Player, and test if it can play a CD you've burned. Open the CD burning software that came with your computer or disc drive, and test to see if it can burn a CD.

If you're not able to read or burn discs using other software, there may be a more general issue with your computer or the drive. You should probably contact your computer or drive manufacturer for help. In the mean time, try the tips below.

Use good blank discs

Some brands of blank discs may work better with your drive than others. Check the disc manufacturer's website for the brand of blank discs you are using. Many brands post lists of drives that have issues burning to their discs. They may also publish tips on how to troubleshoot burning issues.

You can use the chart below as a general guideline to assess what types of CD-R media are compatible with different drive types.

Drive Type Drive Type Logo CD-RW Speed Range Media Type Supported Multi Speed Drive 1x ~ 4x Multi Speed CD-RW media High Speed Drive 4x ~ 16x Multi Speed CD-RW media
High Speed CD-RW media Ultra Speed Drive 16x ~ 24x Multi Speed CD-RW media
High Speed CD-RW media
Ultra Speed CD-RW media

Check for software updates

Microsoft or your computer's manufacturer may have released updated software. Check to see if there are updates to Windows or to the software that controls the drive. Check your computer manufacturer's website for updates, particularly for updates to the CD or DVD drive. If you bought the drive separately from the computer, check the drive manufacturer's website. See this document for additional information on updating software for Windows.

Check for firmware updates

From time to time manufacturers publish updates to a CD or DVD drive's internal software (known as firmware). Check your computer manufacturer's website for firmware updates first. This is important because the internal drives used by some companies (including Dell) require special firmware. If an update is not available from the computer manufacturer, check with the company that made the drive.

Updating your drive's firmware is a particularly good troubleshooting step if iTunes is showing a 2122, 2123, or 2131 error when trying to burn a CD. For optical drives manufactured by Aopen, firmware updates can be downloaded at http://download.aopen.com.tw/.

Important: Use special care when installing firmware updates. Incorrectly installing a firmware update could damage the drive and make it unusable. Always check with the computer manufacturer first before checking with the drive manufacturer.

Tip: If you need help with the next two steps, contact the company that manufactured your computer or drive.

Check hardware configuration

Check if your computer's drive is capable of Direct Memory Access (DMA). If so, turn on that feature and make sure the drive is not set to use Programmed Input Output (PIO). DMA and PIO are two ways a drive can be configured to connect and transfer data to a computer. PIO is the slower method. This could affect the drive's performance. If you have two drives, make sure the other drive is not using PIO either. It could affect the drive you are trying to use with iTunes. Check with the computer or drive manufacturer for additional information.

To turn on DMA:

Open Device Manager (right-click on My Computer (Windows XP and Windows 2000) or Computer (Windows Vista and Windows 7) and in the shortcut menu, click Manage) Select Device Manager. Click the plus sign, or arrow, next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Right-click on the IDE bus that contains the optical drive and in the shortcut menu, click Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
Make sure the Transfer Mode for the devices on the bus is set to DMA if available, not PIO Only.

Check drive audio cable

Some internal drives (such as the MediaStor CD-R/RW 52x24x52x) have a 2- to 4-pin analog audio cable that must be plugged into the main motherboard. This is in addition to the wider 40- to 80-pin ATA or IDE cable that connects the drive to the logic board. If the analog audio cable is not plugged in, the drive can behave in erratic ways.

Remove iPod and test

If you connect your iPod to the computer via USB and you use a USB burner, try ejecting and disconnecting iPod before trying to burn.

The first teaser trailer for Thor 2: The Dark World has hit the internet and... I don't know what to make of it yet. I enjoyed Malekith, the accursed dark elf, as Walt Simonson rendered him in the Thor comics decades ago, but I don't get any real sense of his character here and how it plays into whatever greater story arc they have for Thor this time around. And his look in the film doesn't really wow me so far.

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

There seems to be some reverse fish-out-of-water action going on, with Sarah Foster going to Asgard this time instead of Thor going to Earth/Midgard like in the previous film, but other than that... not much is shown.

Hopefully they're building up to Surtur and an adaption of Ragnarok 'n Roll for the third movie in the series, because that's probably the best Thor story ever written, and I'd love to see it brought to film. We'll have to wait until more trailers are released later this summer, and ultimately until Thor 2: The Dark World is released and we've seen it to know for sure, but in the mean time there's lots of great Marvel Thor media on iTunes to tide us over. Here are some of my favorites. (I'm re-watching Avengers for what must be the 12th time on my iPad mini right now.)
