The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be sponsoring International Survivors of Suicide Day this Saturday, November 23rd, 2013. This special day is dedicated to those individuals who have lost someone to the terrible tragedy of suicide. According to AFSP, approximately 100 people in the United States take their own lives each day. With the holidays fast approaching it can be a difficult time for those that suffer from a mental illness or for those who have lost a love one to suicide. Take time this holiday to remember those special people. They need your love and support even more during the holiday season.
Events will be planned throughout the U.S. and globally in remembrance of International Survivors of Suicide Day and a 90 minute DVD program created by AFSP will be shown with advice and personal stories from survivors of suicide and mental health professionals. Organizations are encouraged to spread the word about suicide prevention and plan events of their own. Many resources can be found for planning an event by going to the AFSP web site at www.afsp.org.
If you know someone who is experiencing a mental illness please encourage them to get help. Mental health education, counseling, and medication have helped many people in times of need and assistance with their illness or condition. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). For more information on suicide prevention please go to www.afsp.org today.
